Spinal Cord Injury to the lumbar region can damage the reflex arch that causes flaccid paralysis and that means standard FES will not work effectively. Peripheral nerve injury or plexus brachialis injury affects the nerves being fired traditionally. Using a different type frequency and modulation, we stock what’s called RISE stimulator that works well with denervated muscles. This can be used at home and would work better with your injury type for building muscle effectively.
The Rise Den2x simulator is the backup plan to when FES doesn’t work. When someone injures their lumbar area, it can affect the reflex arch that FES requires to work. To know whether you will see benefits from FES you will need to take a reflex test which will indeed tell you whether your legs will respond correctly. If they don’t, it’s either because the muscle is so weak and you can’t see the reflex (False positive); or, FES really isn’t going work because you’re not getting a knee jerk response. If the muscles are weak, you could try a very cheap EMS Stimulator and see for yourself if the muscle contracts before committing to buying the Dens2x.
There are many benefits to using it, just like FES you can build muscle mass and increase bone density. If Eddie hall sat on your knee, your legs might not break that’s for sure.
T11 -T12 Spinal Cord Injury
I've noticed my muscles have bulked up, they've not wasted away and actually got a bit stronger since using the rise. I use this and the benefits from using it are that my legs don't look so horrible when I've got shorts on. They've gone back to near normal rather than just wasting!
If FES doesn’t work for you, you can still get passive range of motion with a Berkelbike Pro and the Pedal Assist Add-on. Watch your legs go round, get a bit of extra speed!
